Learning Outcomes: Teaching on the Run Workshops

1. Planning Learning  focuses on planning effective placements and participants will be able to:

  • Define and identify the purpose of learning outcomes
  • Recognise the importance of teaching and learning preferences
  • Develop a Learning Plan
  • Discuss elements of the Learning Plan
  • Identify content of an educational history
  • Discuss challenges and strategies for implementing the Learning Plan

 

2. Clinical Teaching  provides a framework for teaching and participants will be able to:

  • Identify the benefits of teaching
  • Explore adult learning principles and areas of learning
  • Define SNAPPS for clinical reasoning
  • Explore the positive critique method
  • Practice clinical teaching and giving feedback
  • Utilise the teaching framework: Set, Dialogue and Closure
  • Increase confidence in teaching ability

 

3.  Skills Teaching  focuses on the  Four-step approach and participants will be able to:

  • Define the cognitive elements of a skill
  • Identify the features of a skill
  • Examine the Four-step approach
  • Explore the positive critique for giving feedback
  • Practice the Four- step approach and giving feedback
  • Discuss applying the Four –step approach in the workplace
  • Discuss competence and performance

 

4.  Assessment  will address assessment of learners and participants will be able to:

  • Identify elements of effective feedback
  • Recognise when to give feedback
  • Critique the feedback process
  • Define different types of assessment
  • Identify formative feedback experiences
  • Build confidence with formative and summative assessment
  • Recognise potential problems and how to approach management

 

5.  Supporting Learners  will address issues for learners who need support and participants will be able to:

  • Recognise learner, supervision and system problems
  • Identify flags for immediate action
  • Analyse clinical placement scenarios
  • Identify a framework for supporting learners
  • Apply a framework for supporting learners
  • Discuss strategies for prevention and management
  • Increase confidence in dealing with difficult situations

 

6.  Effective Group Teaching  will explore large group teaching and participants will be able to:

  • Identify considerations and challenges when group teaching
  • Recognise a variety of effective group teaching methods
  • Explore a framework for group teaching
  • Identify strategies to evaluate teaching
  • Recognise group size differences
  • Explore active learning strategies
  • Practise presenting and evaluating teaching

 

7. Clinical Supervision focuses on identifying important attributes and the development of skills to support those involved as clinical supervisors.   Participants will be able to:

  • Define CS and functions of supervision
  • Explore the benefits & challenges of different CE models
  • Identify the benefits of establishing a CSA
  • Reflect on giving feedback to learners
  • Self-assess your strengths & areas for improvement
  • Identify the attributes of an effective supervisor
  • Explore self-assessment in supervision
  • Establish an appropriate supervisor-supervisee relationship
  • Discuss documentation to support CS process
